Old Wounds

Description

Hemera Clouds was the perfect example of a Broken Mare. She lost so many ponies who meant the world to her-it broke her spirit and heart-yet that Princess of Daylight kept moving like a clock hand. Her routines were engraved in the lives of the Castle Staff-as sure as the sun that came up at dawn Hemera would be up and moving around like clock work, checking this and that, bringing a smile to everyponys lips no matter what mood they'd be in.
So it was awfully unusual to not see the beloved Princess up and walking around just as the sun peeked above the horizon in the early morning hours. But the Castle Staff shrugged it off with a sound made-up reason that comforted their minds, and kept about their daily routines.
What they didn't know is that their certain beloved Princess was locked in the Solar Tower, curled into her mother and weeping like a small school filly. Hemera, on this day, craved the comforting love of her mother and wished desperately to wipe away the pain that followed her every hoofstep. Yet, with all her power, that was one of the things she couldn't do.
And like clock work, two hours later, the Princess reemerged from her locked spire and traversed the world of politics until High Noon at her mothers side. Today was a kind of day Hemera didn't dare lock herself away by her lonesome or even step away for five seconds from her mothers side, for she knew given the chance she'd wallow in pity and shut down. She'd done it many times in the past and found it effective to keep herself outside in public and by her sisters, mother and aunt. It had been a long four hundred years. Hemera had learned much in that time. Like not pushing others away when all they wanted to do was help you and ease the pain you felt.
At lunch, all was quiet until her mother spoke those four words. "Are you alright, dear?" Hemera merely shook her head as she broke down into tears. Celestia got up without a single word and swept Hemera in a powerful grasp and teleporting them both into the Throne Room where the doors were locked tight and wards were in place so nopony could possibly hear the screaming the Princess of Daylight was doing. "How can you stand it?" Hemera's voice cut the hair like a sharp sword. "How can you stand to see them wilt away like that? Doesn't it kill you?" Celestia smiles sadly at her Little Daylight. She knew better than anyone about love and loss-how dangerous both of them could be-and if not handled properly or at the right time, deadly. Celestia, beyond any shadow of a doubt, has felt the pain of loss more times than any one mortal could count in their heads. The sting of it was ever present every time she raised the sun, and every time she peered into her childrens souls she could feel the ache of the thousands of years she's been alive, and how now it took a toll on them as well as she?
"I don't." Her answer is simple and confusing, gathering Hemera's attention. "I don't stand it. At least not alone. I've always had Luna, and when I didn't have her, I head other immortals that shared the pain of this curse that runs in our blood." She pauses, approaching her daughter. "Tell me, beloved, what is it you see when you look at your Cutie Mark?" Hemera lifts her wing and peers down at the mark. Her soul aches in sadness for a second before warmth spreads throughout her. But she doesn't understand. What does her Cutie Mark have to do with the ache of loss? The cold that spreads throughout her heart every time she thinks of all the ponies she's surpassed and left far behind.
"I see the sun peeking through the top of the cloud." Hemera whispers. "Your destiny, Hemera, is to bring joy to others even though you sometimes cannot feel that joy yourself. That sun is you, looking down upon your subjects with the glow of daylight breaking the gloom in their minds. And that spark represents the spark inside of you, my dear daughter. You have been through so much pain, more than a mortal can comprehend, yet make others smile despite the sadness in your heart." Celestia smiles kindly at Hemera, who is still looking at her mark in curiosity more than sadness now. She's beginning to understand, but not quite, so Celestia continues.
"Hemera, my love, sometimes old wounds never heal...but that's OK, so long as it doesn't kill you. Ponies have scars in unexpected places, like secret road maps to their personal histories, diagrams of dead memories. Most of our old wounds heal and leave nothing but a scar behind, a reminder of what took place. But sometimes, some don't, some wounds we will carry with us through time immemorial, and though the cut's long gone, the pain will still linger. Hemera, loss is something we will never get used to-and that's good-it means we're alive. And even though most of my most precious friends are long past, I remember and cherish the good times I had with them. I will always remember my friends and their true beauty, and I hope when the pain of losing them calms, you can look back and smile at those good times as well. But don't make the mistake I once did-don't distance yourself because you're afraid of that pain-make new friends while cherishing the old, smile at every chance you get, laugh when you can and enjoy the short time you have with the friends you've made now. Old wounds are just that: old. I know that does not mean they don't still ache and burn, but with time, that will vanish and all that will be left in it's place is fond memories and laughter." Hemera wipes the tears from her eyes with her hoof and gives Celestia a giant, crushing hug. "Thank you." She whispers, closing her eyes and holding her mother tight.
Hemera's wounds won't fade for a long time, but with her family by her side, she'll laugh and smile and remember why the wounds are worth getting.

In my head, Hemera is one of the immortals who takes it the hardest when someone she loves dies because they're mortal. Hemera loves with all the passion in the world, so it crushes and breaks her when she loses someone close that's mortal. Celestia would be the most supportive of the bunch, Luna a close second.
